About the SLP

Hello, I'm Laurence (she/her) and I'm a speech-language pathologist (SLP) specializing in voice disorders and orofacial myofunctional disorders.

For as long as I can remember, I have always been attracted to languages and their acquisition. I also wanted to do more education than my parents. Why? No idea, but I wanted to go to college! My choice fell on speech-language pathology since it aligned with several values and desires that I had, including helping and teaching children and adults without ever having two identical days.

I have been a ballet teacher for children and adults for a long time, which allowed me to develop my pedagogy and, at the same time, my creativity and my adaptability. I swear to you that teaching ballet classes at 8 a.m. on a Saturday morning to 6-year-olds is challenging and requires a lot of adaptability.

After moving from my native region, Côte-Nord, I completed a bachelor's degree in psychology at Université Laval in addition to a microprogram in Russian (because why not). After that, I obtained my master's degree in speech-language pathology at Université de Montréal in their brand new 2-year program.

Why Voice Disorders? I was a part of a musical theater troupe for two years (before the pandemic shut everything down) where I was able to learn to sing. I had never pushed myself so much and stepped out of my comfort zone but this new way of using my voice allowed me to find a new confidence in myself and ignite my interest for voice pathology. My signing teacher's approach was very anatomical, which resonated greatly with me and helped me better understand how to use my voice in order to sing in productions like Chicago or Rent. I also had a great first intership that I loved during my master's degree in Voice Disorders at CHUM.

Why Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMD)? Very little known to the general public, I understood that there was a great demand for this expertise of speech therapy. At my first job, we had very good mentoring for OMD intervention and that pushed me to train more. Through follow-up with my patients and personal moments, I also discovered an interest in tongue ties.

Coming from a remote region and after working in the "big city", I understood how speech therapy was difficult to access for the majority of Quebecers. So I wanted to bring a little expertise to areas of speech therapy that are less present here in the region. With my hybrid and remote approach, anyone in the thick of Côte-Nord or Lac-St-Jean can have access to speech therapy services in order to regain some quality of life. Finally, since the beginning of my master's degree, I inspire to highlight the studies in and practice of speech-language pathology. Very little information is available to students entering this program, so I wanted to remedy this situation. Thanks to my Instagram account, I have been able to help students understand what they are getting into and promote my practice.
